Limerick Illustration

This illustration was part of an assignment for SCAD’s ILLU-503 Illustration Strategies class to create a visual representation of a chosen limerick.  Each student was tasked with selecting a limerick to develop into a visually conceptual and intriguing piece.

I initially chose two limericks to move forward with into the ideation stages, ultimately choosing the "Young Lady of Wales" limerick as I felt it yielded stronger composition ideas.  From the keywords that came forward in the mind maps and vision from the mood boards, I ultimately went with a whimsical and exciting composition of the fish flying above the young lady and out of the water.  This idea highlighted the excited nature of the original limerick as the young lady "lifted" her hook from the water.  After some revisions following the class's feedback, I developed how each element and character would be highlighted within the composition.  The final illustration clearly focuses on the two characters - the young lady and the fish without scales - using contrast in the background and textures throughout the piece.  I wanted to emphasize the straightforward idea of the limerick by keeping the additional elements concise.
